WHAT YOU CAN DO?

It is difficult to diagnose exactly what causes mouth sores. We do know that stress and bad nutrition often play a significant role in making canker sores worse. And, it will probably be easier to improve your diet than reduce your stress. A few stress management suggestions are: daily walking, listening to music, participating in a hobby, playing with children, swimming. The key is to take time out from any anxiety producing routines.

Prevention tips & advice for mouth sore sufferers:

1. Watch what you eat and drink. Cut down on acidic fruits and juices - orange juice, tomatoes, pineapples. Avoid salty and spicy foods - pizza, spaghetti, potato chips. Also, foods with a rough texture (corn on the cob) may scratch the inside of your mouth.

2. Gently brush your teeth. Make sure your toothbrush bristles are soft.

3. Avoid using mouth rinses while sores are present.

4. If you smoke, quit. If that is not possible, at least cut down on your cigarettes.

5. Slow down while eating to avoid hitting your cheek or gums with a fork or spoon.

6. Watch out for hot foods that may burn the inside of your mouth.
